About the Staff Accountant II position:

The Staff Accountant II plays a critical role in the monthly accounting activities and financial operations of the company. This role performs full-cycle general ledger accounting, including month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, vendor ledger management. Additionally, the Staff Accountant II partners with revenue and AR teams to support invoice creation, accruals and budget versus actual variance analysis. This role is responsible for producing monthly reporting on key accounts, identifying process optimization opportunities, supporting external audit and tax requests, helping to maintain strong internal controls, and acting as a resource to junior staff. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented accountant to build toward a senior role in a high-growth healthcare tech environment.

This position is eligible for remote work, but regular business travel will be required, including Avalon's corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Staff Accountant II – Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Lead key aspects of the monthly close cycle: prepare and post timely and accurate journal entries, accruals and adjustments.
  • Maintain and continuously update general ledger records & files, ensure all supporting documentation is complete and in compliance with company policy and GAAP.
  • Prepare, review and reconcile balance sheet accounts (e.g., bank accounts, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accruals, vendor ledger, other key GL accounts).
  • Generate monthly dashboards and account‐specific reports to management, highlighting variances, trends and actionable insights.
  • Assist with revenue cycle support: generate customer invoices (or review them), manage AR ledger, track collections and monitor aged balances.
  • Serve as a key contributor to external audit and tax engagements: prepare schedules, respond to auditor and tax‐advisor requests, provide documentation and explanations.
  • Act as a resource to junior staff accountants and interns: provide guidance, review their work, help them stay on track, contribute to their development.
  • Assist in cross-training across accounting tasks to foster team resilience and knowledge sharing.
  • Take initiative in continuous improvement: recommend and implement process enhancements, system automation (e.g., via Excel, add-ins, workflow enhancements) and best practices to optimize efficiency and accuracy.

Staff Accountant II – Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business, or equivalent work experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a related role.
  • Ensuring compliance with US generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and income tax requirements.
  • Knowledge of and experience using Enterprise resource planning accounting systems such as NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, or Intacct.
  • Working knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office applications and in particular Microsoft Excel including functions such as VLOOKUPs and pivot tables.
  • Analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate accounting data with attention to detail and accuracy.

Staff Accountant II – Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using NetSuite, Blackline, Bill.com, and/or Concur software solutions.
  • Experience in a start-up or early-stage company helpful.
