DevOps Engineer Job Description

The role of a DevOps Engineer (DevOps) is to ensure that developed products are quickly and successfully deployed for customer use. This involves understanding the platform requirements of the software including environmental (memory, disk, CPU, cache…), required 3rd party packages (OS versions, DB release, web servers…), internal dependencies (other software products and embedded packages), configuration requirements (ports, locations, settings…) and security requirements (firewall settings, certificates…).

DevOps bridges the information from Development to Cloud Operations (CloudOps) to make sure all parties are aligned for smooth deployment and successful operation of the products. In many cases, DevOps will produce and maintain any documentation needed by CloudOps to obtain hardware, configure the environment (network, OS, DB…) and set up monitoring for problem alerting. DevOps will work closely with CloudOps on scheduling activities, managing systems and addressing concerns. DevOps will also assist L2 Support when needed to diagnose and correct any environmental issue impacting our customers.

Once these requirements are understood, DevOps is responsible for using various tools (Chef, Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, scripts…) to automate the process of deploying the product with minimal manual intervention and maximum reusability, reducing customer impact and downtime as much as practical. DevOps is also responsible for coordinating with Quality Assurance (QA) and Development on how to properly validate that the system is fully operational, including running of automated ‘smoke’ tests, confirming monitoring is in place and any other confirmation that the system is ready for use and configured according to the requirements from Development.

Detailed requirement:
