About the Role
The Principal Cloud Engineer is a highly experienced individual contributor responsible for owning the technical depth of Keyloop’s AWS cloud operations landscape.
This role requires strong architectural capability, advanced automation expertise, operational governance maturity, and deep troubleshooting skills. You will act as a senior technical authority across AWS environments, driving platform stability, defining technical standards, leading modernization initiatives, and strengthening cost governance practices.
This is not a managerial role. It is a hands-on, high-impact technical position requiring ownership, technical credibility, and operational maturity.
IMPORTANT:
This position requires working in UK business hours and occasional off-hours engagement during P1 and Major Incident (MI) situations to provide senior technical leadership and resolution support.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Ownership of Cloud Landscape
- Take end-to-end technical ownership of AWS environments across multiple workloads
- Assess architecture, reliability posture, automation maturity, and security controls
- Identify structural and operational gaps and implement technical improvements
- Define and enforce cloud engineering standards and best practices • Ensure environments are scalable, secure, resilient, and cost-efficient
- Advanced Infrastructure as Code & Automation
- Lead Terraform design, module architecture, and governance enforcement
- Improve Infrastructure as Code maturity and eliminate configuration drift
- Strengthen CI/CD technical implementation across OneCD, ArgoCD, and deployment pipelines
- Drive automation of operational processes to reduce manual effort and improve reliability
- Improve release governance and deployment consistency
- Operational Stability & Incident Authority
- Act as senior technical escalation point for complex cloud incidents
- Lead deep technical troubleshooting during P1 and Major Incidents
- Perform detailed root cause analysis and implement permanent fixes
- Improve CloudWatch monitoring, alerting standards, and observability coverage
- Strengthen reliability engineering practices and resilience design
- Cloud Migration & Modernisation
- Lead technical execution of cloud migrations and re-architecture initiatives
- Design and implement modern cloud-native patterns
- Improve scalability, availability, and performance of existing workloads
- Collaborate with engineering teams to modernise legacy systems
- FinOps & Cost Engineering
- Analyse AWS usage patterns and identify optimisation opportunities
- Drive cost reduction initiatives through rightsizing, architectural changes, and commitment strategies
- Improve cost visibility and tagging governance
- Embed cost-awareness into infrastructure design decisions
- Governance & Engineering Standards
- Define technical guardrails and governance controls
- Improve compliance, security posture, and operational discipline
- Contribute to documentation, reusable frameworks, and engineering playbooks
- Mentor engineers through technical guidance and design reviews
Essential Skills & Experience
- Deep hands-on experience with AWS cloud infrastructure and services
- Strong expertise in Terraform and Infrastructure as Code design patterns
- Advanced knowledge of CloudWatch, monitoring strategies, alerting, and observability best practices
- Strong exposure to OneCD, ArgoCD, and CI/CD implementation
- Experience executing complex cloud migrations and modernization programs
- Strong troubleshooting capability across compute, networking, IAM, and application layers
- Deep understanding of cloud security and governance principles
- Strong FinOps awareness with practical optimisation experience
- Experience acting as senior technical escalation authority
- Strong documentation, architectural design, and technical communication skills
- Ability to operate independently with high ownership and accountability
- Ability to work in UK business hours with flexibility during critical incidents
- Experience in large multi-account AWS environments
- Exposure to Kubernetes and container platforms
- Experience implementing policy-as-code and governance automation
- AWS Certifications (Professional preferred)
- Experience in enterprise-scale production environments
