The Senior Director of Software Engineering is a key member of the technology leadership team, responsible for defining and driving the short- and long-term strategic direction of multiple software engineering functions. This role will oversee and scale engineering operations, lead cross-functional technical initiatives, and ensure delivery of business-critical software platforms and services. The ideal candidate will combine deep technical expertise with strong business acumen, operational excellence, and exceptional leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Direction
• Develop and implement the short-term strategy for one or more engineering functions aligned with broader organizational goals.
• Provide input to executive leadership on product and technology direction, investments, and innovation.
• Establish and operationalize department-wide policies, practices, and standards to ensure consistency and excellence across teams.
Technical & Business Leadership
• Translate company-wide objectives into functional and cross-functional engineering plans.
• Lead senior engineering teams in the design, development, and delivery of scalable, high-quality software systems.
• Champion engineering excellence, modern development practices, and a strong DevOps culture.
Problem Solving & Innovation
• Operate at a high level of abstraction to solve complex, ambiguous problems across business domains.
• Evaluate and prioritize fundamental issues affecting business performance and define the engineering response.
Collaboration & Influence
• Engage and negotiate with internal and external executive-level stakeholders to influence business and technical strategy.
• Represent engineering in cross-functional strategic planning with product, operations, security, and customer success teams.
• Influence policy, architecture, and decision-making across the organization.
Financial & Operational Accountability
• Own and manage engineering budgets, resource planning, and staffing for multiple teams and functions.
• Ensure financial objectives and ROI are met through effective planning, execution, and operational oversight.
Management & Supervision
• Lead and mentor a team of Directors, Senior Managers, and Engineers to deliver exceptional results.
• Drive the recruitment, retention, and growth of top-tier engineering talent.
• Foster a high-performance, inclusive, and psychologically safe engineering culture.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (MBA is a plus).
• 15+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5+ years in senior leadership roles.
• Proven experience managing large, distributed, and high-performing software development organizations.
• Track record of delivering complex software systems at scale in an agile, cloud-based environment.
• Deep understanding of software development methodologies, architecture, security, and infrastructure.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related technical field required.
Master’s degree in Business Administration, Health Informatics, or related field preferred.
Travel
Travel will vary based on the candidate’s location. In typical conditions, travel is estimated at 25–30%.
