Senior Scientist

We are seeking a Senior Scientist to join the MyHeritage Science Team, an innovative research team that works with one of the largest DNA datasets in the world. In this critical role, you will build new features and algorithms and improve existing ones, including ethnicity estimation, relationship inference, and prediction of phenotypic traits. This work directly impacts millions of users by providing them with accurate information on their ancestry and family connections.
This unique position offers an exciting blend of academic rigor and industry application, focused on the science behind MyHeritage DNA products. You will apply state-of-the-art science and cutting-edge methods to analyze millions of DNA samples and family trees. Your efforts will help users worldwide discover their heritage and connect with family through science.
What you’ll do
- Work with a huge volume of genetic and genealogical data, which includes the genomes of over 8 million people around the world and billions of genealogical records.
- Develop and expand the company’s DNA analysis toolset, combining bioinformatics, population and statistical genetics, and machine learning, and testing new ideas stemming from both the product perspective and the scientific literature.
- Take ownership of end-to-end development of state-of-the-art DNA products, from conception through research, development and engineering, all the way to mature products released to millions of people worldwide.
- Work closely with engineering, product, and data teams to translate research outcomes into user-facing features and tools.
- Clearly communicate scientific concepts and progress internally and externally.
- Work with bright DNA researchers in a vibrant intellectual environment.
What you bring
- Advanced degree (ideally Ph.D.) in Genetics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related quantitative field; and 2+ years of relevant experience in industry or postdoctoral studies.
- Strong background in:
- Population genetics and/or statistical genetics.
- Analysis of genotyping or sequencing data.
- Genomic data pipelines and bioinformatics tools.
- Machine learning or statistical modeling applied to biological data.
- Interrogating and troubleshooting data.
- Strong programming skills in Python/R, using scientific and machine learning toolboxes.
- Hands-on expertise in large-scale parallel computing platforms (cloud computing (AWS), computer clusters, Spark, etc.).
- Proficiency in Python and familiarity with production-scale computational pipelines.
- Familiarity with tools such as Snakemake, Airflow, or other pipeline managers is an advantage.
- Experience with AWS is an advantage.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
