The Opportunity
We are seeking a passionate, seasoned leader that is excited by the opportunity to build a world class merchandising team in the pet industry. Pet Circle is incredibly well positioned to unlock value for our Customers and Suppliers - and you will be at the forefront of driving this. Your main ambition is to ensure we have the right range for every Pet and every need, and elevate Pet Circle to being the most trusted partner of our suppliers. You will develop our Merchandising strategy in partnership with our CEO and Founder, and take full ownership for driving performance of our Merchandising function which today includes Category Management, Pricing, Merchandising Planning and Private Label. This is a unique opportunity to rebuild the strategy, structure, ways of working, tools and processes with full trust and autonomy. You will be an important part of our leadership team that is responsible for steering our business operationally, commercially and culturally.
Your focus
Shape and execute the Merchandising Strategy
• Lead your team in the development and execution of merchandising strategies that are Customer and Pet First, with a strong data-first approach
Lead the Category and Private Label teams in the planning and procurement of inventory that will meet our customer and financial goals. Work cross functionally to identify optimisation opportunities by Pet, Category, Channel, Acquisition funnel, Conversion funnel etc. to accelerate profitable growth
Partner with the Chief Marketing Officer and Marketing team to effectively develop the creative, content and site presentations to support key merchandising initiatives, our product assortment and positively elevate our CVP
Grow and maintain Pet Circle as a trusted, valued partner across our supplier base by building strong relationships and negotiating favourable terms. Set the gold standard for how the team run supplier meetings and execute our commitments
Identify and develop new assets and tools to sustainably grow average order value and product margin
Identify and develop Playbooks and Business Rules that Category Managers require to execute their objectives
Develop Pet Circle’s pricing policy and strategy with CEO and CCO
Team leadership
Drive a high performing sales and account management team, coaching negotiation techniques and how to grow win-win partnerships
Mentor, train, and develop your teams. You’ll lead with context and vulnerability, sharing feedback and coaching to build future leaders and strong succession plans
Maintain the prioritisation of your team as well as influencing the prioritisation of cross-functional teams to ensure business objectives are met
Broader business leadership
Take ownership of solving business problems, even when not squarely in your remit. Promote strong cross-functional collaboration to work on opportunities that sit between teams. And always, prioritise business over functional goals.
Lead cross functional projects requiring a Merchandising or product pricing perspective
Embody creativity to continuously learn and develop our understanding of the current and future customer; applying that customer insight to the evolution of the brand and concepts
Collaborate with Supply Chain, Demand Planning, Marketing and Product to build new capability in merchandising
Your Ideal Experience
Extensive experience in retail merchandising (online retail preferable), category planning, pricing, business development and strategy
Proven track record successfully leading large teams across multiple projects and workstreams. You take accountability for your team’s functional and business outcomes
Experience using and scaling merchandising and inventory tools (WMS, ERP…) and processes
A seasoned negotiator with the ability to establish strong supplier partnerships, drive significant commercial outcomes and coach your teams to do the same

What Does Success Look Like
Deliver commercial business goals; ultimately drive Lifetime Value per Customer and Pet, and maximise a sustainable Product Margin and revenue growth for Pet Circle
Elevate Pet Circle to being the most trusted partner of our suppliers and the preferred choice of our customers
Your team will be technically capable, as well as highly engaged and empowered to deliver quality work. This will require a commitment to ongoing learning and development, as well as a focus on high performance and transparent feedback

Role Location
At Pet Circle we believe that collaboration and team connection is key for success. This role will be based in Sydney with a blended working arrangement of 2 days in our pet friendly offices and the remaining working from home.
As part of your working from home arrangement we will provide you with IT hardware and an office allowance to support your home set up. #LI-Hybrid
