Staff Quality Assurance Engineer

Our Mission
Healthcare should work for patients, but it doesn’t. In their time of need, they call down outdated insurance directories. Then wait on hold. Then wait weeks for the privilege of a visit. Then wait in a room solely designed for waiting. Then wait for a surprise bill. In any other consumer industry, the companies delivering such a poor customer experience would not survive. But in healthcare, patients lack market power. Which means they are expected to accept the unacceptable.
Zocdoc’s mission is to give power to the patient. To do that, we’ve built the leading healthcare marketplace that makes it easy to find and book in-person or virtual care in all 50 states, across +200 specialties and +12k insurance plans. By giving patients the ability to see and choose, we give them power. In doing so, we can make healthcare work like every other consumer sector, where businesses compete for customers, not the other way around. In time, this will drive quality up and prices down.
We’re 18 years old and the leader in our space, but we are still just getting started. If you like solving important, complex problems alongside deeply thoughtful, driven, and collaborative teammates, read on.
Your impact on mission:
As a Staff Quality Assurance Engineer at Zocdoc, you will be a technical visionary and a key driver of our quality strategy across multiple teams. You will move beyond individual feature testing to architecting scalable automation frameworks, defining organizational quality standards, and leading high-impact, cross-functional initiatives that shape how we deliver software. Your expertise in advanced tools like Playwright and AI-augmented testing will be instrumental in evolving our "shift-left" culture into a world-class, data-driven quality engine.
Your day-to-day is:
- Technical Leadership: Lead complex, cross-functional initiatives across teams and product domains, driving quality through advanced automation and AI-driven testing strategies.
- Strategy & Architecture: Designing innovative test solutions and architecting scalable automation frameworks (e.g., Playwright) that serve as repeatable practices for the entire engineering org.
- Strategic Mentorship: Promoting a culture of excellence by guiding senior peers, mentoring junior engineers, and sharing context to align the team on broader quality goals.
- Process Innovation: Thinking 3–6 months ahead to anticipate risks and identify opportunities for technical innovation, such as AI-driven testing or advanced CI/CD quality gates.
- Ambiguity Management: Handling highly undefined problem spaces with confidence, breaking them into actionable paths, and bringing clarity to complex technical challenges.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serving as a thought partner to Product and Engineering leadership, influencing technical decisions through deep subject matter expertise.
- Quality Advocacy: Establishing organizational metrics to measure customer-perceived quality and driving initiatives that directly improve the user experience.
You’ll be successful in this role if you have:
- Experience: 4–7+ years of software product quality engineering experience, including 3–5 years leading complex projects or providing indirect technical leadership.
- Automation Mastery: Extensive hands-on experience with Playwright (preferred), Cypress, or CodeRabbit, focusing on building self-healing and enterprise-scale E2E suites.
- AI Expertise: Demonstrated ability to integrate emerging technologies (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) into the QA lifecycle to automate documentation or test generation.
- Strategic Mindset: Proven ability to anticipate risks 3–6 months in advance and align technical execution with long-term functional goals.
- Problem Solving: A track record of diagnosing complex technical issues impacting multiple teams and implementing scalable prevention patterns.
- Business Acumen: Ability to use data to guide prioritization and resource trade-offs, understanding the financial implications of "defect leakage" and testing efficiency.
- Global Perspective: Experience applying industry benchmarks and global tech trends (e.g., privacy laws, localized testing) to improve internal standards.
Essential Responsibilities Include:
- Own Outcomes: Taking accountability for quality outcomes across a broad product domain, ensuring execution aligns with organizational OKRs.
- Standard Setting: Defining and championing quality governance models and "testability" considerations at the architectural level.
- Continuous Improvement: Sharing knowledge through TechTalks, workshops, and lunch-and-learns to level up the entire engineering organization.
- Risk Assessment: Conducting formal risk assessments for major releases and making high-level decisions on tool selection and test methodologies.
Key Performance Indicators:
- Organizational Impact: Measurable improvements in team maturity and execution quality across the domain.
- Technical Excellence: Reliability and scalability of the automation frameworks and repeatable practices you establish.
- Talent Development: Success in coaching and leveling up senior individual contributors within the QA function.
- Release Confidence: Reduction in defect escape rates and improvement in release velocity through optimized quality gates.
