About the role

This role is based out of our NYC office. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.
- New York City: $160,000 - $193,000

A day in the life
- Lead Betterment’s Financial Crimes/AML/BSA Compliance Program: Oversee the company’s anti-money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act program, investigate suspicious activity, and ensure timely regulatory reporting
- Maintain and Improve Compliance Standards: Continuously update the AML/BSA program to stay compliant with federal and state laws, including the Bank Secrecy Act, USA PATRIOT Act, and OFAC rules
- Advise on Financial Crime Compliance: Work with internal teams to offer practical compliance guidance related to AML, BSA, OFAC, and other financial crime regulations across our products and services
- Collaborate on Business Growth: Partner with product, partnerships, and other teams to support new launches and enhancements while ensuring strong financial crime compliance
- Manage External Partnerships: Coordinate with banking partners and other service providers to meet AML/BSA requirements, including support for audits
- Support Vendor Reviews: Help evaluate and approve vendors from a financial crime compliance perspective during onboarding and due diligence
- Oversee Key Compliance Controls: Lead efforts around customer due diligence (CDD), enhanced due diligence (EDD), transaction monitoring, and sanctions screening
- Handle Regulatory Changes: Monitor and manage updates to financial crime laws and regulations, and ensure internal processes are updated accordingly
- Lead Monitoring and Training Programs: Implement and manage compliance-related training, risk assessments, ongoing monitoring, and third-party audits
What we’re looking for
- At least 7 years of experience regarding fraud, AML or related areas of coverage.
- Thorough knowledge of FINRA and SEC rules and regulations governing broker-dealers, as well as AML laws, rules and regulations
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to exercise sound and balanced judgment
- Ability to build effective relationships and develop strong partnerships across the business
- A solutions-oriented mindset and organizational agility
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- A meticulous attention to detail

What happens next

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.
On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision.
