About Betterment
Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company that offers investing and retirement solutions for retail investors and investment advisors as well as financial wellness solutions, including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses. About the role
-
The Investing Experience team sits at the center of Betterment’s retail product, shaping how more than a million clients understand their portfolios, evaluate performance, and experience the value of automated advice. As a Senior Product Manager, you will help define and deliver a modern investing experience that is intuitive, visually elegant, and sophisticated, without feeling overwhelming.
This team takes a visual-first, design-forward approach to investing, with a high bar for clarity and execution. Product leaders are expected to question assumptions and inherited constraints in order to deliver simpler, more effective client experiences, especially in a domain shaped by legacy financial norms.
You will contribute to a mature but evolving product spanning account creation, portfolio visibility and interpretation, and advanced tax optimization features such as Tax Loss Harvesting and Tax-Coordinated Portfolios. A central focus of this role is helping clients clearly understand how Betterment improves their financial outcomes by demystifying investing concepts, showing how our automation works on their behalf, and surfacing the value of tax-aware investing.
- New York City: $147,000 - $173,000
We offer a competitive equity package, health, dental and vision benefits, life and AD&D, short-term and long-term disability insurance, EAP, commuter and parking benefits FSA/HSA, and 401(k) with employer match as well as a flexible PTO policy. This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.
A day in the life
- Own the product vision for the investing experience, helping clients understand their portfolios, performance, and progress toward their goals.
- Design clear, intuitive experiences that communicate the financial value of Betterment’s automated advice, tax optimization, and portfolio decisions.
- Partner deeply with design to deliver modern, visually clear experiences that balance sophistication with approachability.
- Work closely with engineering to define solutions and tradeoffs, while actively questioning assumptions and default approaches before converging on an implementation.
- Translate changes in portfolio or tax strategy into clear, trustworthy client-facing experiences.
- Define and track success metrics tied to real client outcomes, and use data, experimentation, and research to continuously improve the product.
- Lead cross-functional work across design, engineering, investing, portfolios, custody, and data to deliver scalable, durable solutions.
What we’re looking for
- Senior-level product management experience building consumer-facing products within fintech, financial services, or a closely related regulated domain.
- A passion for designing intuitive, thoughtful, and visually compelling user experiences.
- Comfort with investment concepts, markets, and portfolio mechanics; deeper financial literacy is a strong plus.
- Strong analytical judgment and a data-informed approach to product decision-making, with experience collaborating closely with engineering, design, and subject-matter experts in regulated domains.
- Ability to translate complex systems such as performance calculation, rebalancing, or tax strategies into experiences that build client understanding and trust.
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to articulate product direction and influence cross-functional stakeholders.
- A self-starter who can craft a long-term vision while executing quickly against near-term priorities, with a demonstrated ability to operate in ambiguous problem spaces, question assumptions, and distinguish real constraints from legacy decisions.
- Obsessive attention to detail and a high-quality bar, especially in areas that directly impact client trust.
