The Computer Operator perform duties to initiate and monitor computer procedures; load, maintain and operate laser printers; and enter system commands into the mainframe computer. Handle other data processing duties, while meeting department deadlines.

This is a third shift role - 11pm - 7:30am.

  • Review daily schedules for each shift to determine which procedures need to be completed. Have a thorough knowledge base on which procedures can run simultaneously, understand the purpose of each, and possess the ability to re-run or restart when necessary. This includes executing utilities to restore files, a basic understanding of JCL and identifying the appropriate job set to be restarted.
  • Follow instructions in procedure monitor books to start the daily, mid-month, monthly and yearly schedules. Respond to procedural prompts from the mainframe to generate appropriate output. Monitor equipment for problems or failures; execute recovery procedures using appropriate documentation and reference manuals. Mount cartridges for data input or output as requested by the job(s) running. Use on-line Epic to retrieve information about current disk and cartridge data-sets when necessary.
  • Load laser printers with appropriate stock depending on the output requirements. Coordinate print jobs among the printers to maximize efficiency and to meet deadlines. Inspect quality of printer output, re-print as necessary or directed.
  • Distribute and deliver printed output to appropriate departments. Re-print or reproduce printed output as necessary or requested.
  • Conduct basic cleaning and maintenance of cartridge drives and laser printers using provided chemicals as necessary.
  • Execute and monitor on-line and cartridge downloads, have a working knowledge of the PC operating system and download applications. Change network backup tapes as scheduled and monitor system performance of warehouse network systems.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of and a proficiency in the functions and operations of all three shifts. Cover any of the operation's three shifts as necessary and directed. Contact department Senior Manager, Director or equipment technicians only when uncommon problems arise; otherwise resolve all other problems independently.
  • Effectively communicate with personnel from all departments and divisions. Communicate with operators from previous and following shifts about procedure status and priority, printer performance, and other operational issues.
  • Comply with all safety policies and protection procedures as directed by management and/or Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Monitor and reset the mainframe network communication links, cluster controllers, on-line terminals, RF Equipment and data transfer applications.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work 3rd shift (11pm - 7:30am)
  • 1 - 3 years related experience.
  • High School Degree or equivalent
  • Basic computer skills (e-mail, Internet, general use).
  • Keyboarding/mouse and calculator skills.
  • Basic understanding of the English language (speaking, reading and writing).
  • Basic math skills.
  • Must be able to use small hand tools (i.e. screwdriver, wrench).
  • Must be able to lift 25-50 pounds
  • Must be able to stand, bend for long periods of time.

The position has an hourly range of $19-$20. The above range represents the expected range for this position. The actual salary may vary based upon several factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills/experience, time in role, and geographic/office location.
