The APM+ product organization develops New Relic APM language agents, Mobile and browser agents, Otel APM agents and collector and APM experiences including Distributed tracing, Errors-in-box for on-prem and cloud customers. The APM Java language agent team develops and maintains instrumentation for all the JVM based languages/frameworks such as Scala, Kotlin, etc. We also develop tools to build, deploy and maintain our products.
As a software engineer, you will help us build and extend our open source Java agent and Otel agent products. We are searching for a motivated engineer who is ready for a career-defining role in their next opportunity. The opportunity to work from a remote office may be available depending on the applicant's location.
What you'll do
- Design, build and maintain New Relic and Otel Java open source instrumentation agent and support tools.
- Participate in architectural definitions with a high degree of innovation and creativity.
- Create automation and tooling to make our systems more reliable and easier to deploy.
- Work directly within a multidisciplinary team to help our customers and partners
This role requires
- Bachelor's degree in software development, engineering, or a related technical field.
- 2+ years of experience working as a software engineer in Java/Scala and/or Kotlin with a strong computer science background and an aptitude for learning new languages quickly.
- Proficiency in Java development, including object-oriented programming, data structures, and algorithms.
- Familiarity with internals of JVM and libraries like ByteBuddy, ASM, or similar tools for modifying Java bytecode.
- Strong understanding of open-source observability tools like OpenTelemetry, Jaeger and Prometheus.
- Passion for exploring new technologies and finding creative solutions to complex problems, keeping up with industry trends and advancements in observability and related domains.
- Excellent collaboration abilities, with the capacity to work effectively with cross-functional teams, present ideas, and communicate technical concepts clearly.
- Keep up to date with technologies - AWS/Azure/GCP, serverless, Docker, Kubernetes among others.
Bonus points if you have
- Contributed to open source projects.
- Familiarity with the tech stacks mentioned above.
- Understanding the value that build and test automation brings to a development team's efficiency and reliability and are passionate about applying these techniques to your projects.
- Experience in technical mentorship and help with leveling up the skills of other colleagues on the team.
- Experience with asynchronous programming techniques: streams, event-based flows, task queues, message queues.

The pay range below represents a reasonable estimate of the salary for the listed position. This role is eligible for a corporate bonus plan. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related factors such as an applicant’s skills, qualifications, and experience.
