Your Opportunity

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented HR Generalist to join our team in Tokyo. In this role, you will be responsible for the day-to-day HR operations and provide essential support across the entire employee lifecycle. You will work closely with the local management team to ensure a positive work environment while maintaining compliance with Japanese labor standards.

This role is critical in ensuring a positive employee experience and supporting our growth in the Japanese market. Beyond compliance, you will act as a cultural bridge and a dedicated local resource, ensuring our Tokyo team feels connected to our global mission while fostering a collaborative and effective team environment. Key Responsibilities

Performance Management

  • Partners with HRBP to advise managers and employees on all aspects of the New Relic performance management process both informal and formal.
  • Provides guidance to the business on the appropriate solutions while taking into account New Relic’s policies as well as local laws and regulations.
  • Support on the content of written and verbal informal performance feedback, coaching plans, and/or behavioral/formal improvement plans

Employee Relations (ER)

  • Conducts ER investigations as a lead and/or support aligned with New Relic’s policies as well as local laws and regulations.
  • Resolves and addresses ER relations issues, disciplinary actions, and employee grievances
  • Ensures internal database is kept up to date with all investigations and outcomes logged in a timely manner

Partnership with our People Team functions

  • Partners with Talent Acquisition on job leveling, role descriptions, offers and can participate in interview panels when required
  • Partners with People Operations to address and resolve open inquiries (tickets) initiated by employees and managers that require HRBP team input to close. Topics can be related to compensation, benefits, leaves, HRIS changes, etc
  • Partners on annual programs owned by other teams, such as annual compensation reviews, policy changes/rollouts, engagement survey, and annual performance review process
  • Conducts exit interviews and summarizes trends, while ensuring information is logged correctly within the system for reporting purposes
  • Leads and/ or serves on special HR assigned project teams
  • Supports compliance of all activities with the Japan Labor Standards Act and internal Work Rules (Shugyo Kisoku), security and integrity of data including personal and confidential information.
  • Provides administrative support for monthly payroll processing and social insurance procedures (Shakai Hoken).
  • Leads and/ or serves on special HR assigned project teams

Business Engagement

  • Makes it a priority to lean in and understand the goals and strategies of the business so that they factor into our support and outcomes
  • Collaborates with leadership to align HR strategies with overall business objectives.
  • Analyzes data and trends to recommend, develop, and deliver on plans to improve employee experiences, including attrition,engagement, dei, retention and performance
  • Acts as liaison for change management

May perform other responsibilities as assigned

This role requires

  • 3+ of experience in an HR Generalist or HR Coordinator role in Japan.
  • Fluent Japanese and business-level English (written and verbal) are required for communication with global stakeholders.
  • Solid understanding of Japanese labor laws and social insurance systems.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality.

Bonus points if you have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field.
  • HR experience within a global SaaS organization
  • Experience using G-Suite, Workday, Culture Amp a plus
  • Experience working in fast paced, highly matrixed organization, across multiple time zones
