Data Automation Specialist
Who We Are:

You will join Veson Nautical’s Data Research team, a group of experts in AI-enabled data collection, data validation, process automation, and quality control. Its primary role is to create and maintain comprehensive datasets about the global fleet of cargo vessels and the markets in which they operate, from which Veson Nautical’s industry-leading data products are derived.
The Opportunity:
The Data Automation Specialist supports the Data Research team by designing and building automated solutions for maritime data collection, processing, and delivery. You will collaborate closely with researchers to identify automation opportunities and build production-ready technical solutions. A core focus is developing AI-powered systems to collect information from diverse maritime sources, process it through large language models, and deliver structured outputs to researchers for review and action. Experimentation with emerging AI technologies to solve data challenges is actively encouraged.
Our Stack:
We write applications primarily in Python and TypeScript, leveraging modern LLM APIs (Anthropic, AWS Bedrock) and AI frameworks to build production automation systems. We use GitLab CI/CD for continuous integration and deployment across cloud and on-premise infrastructure. Our data infrastructure includes SQL databases and GraphQL APIs for accessing maritime data sources. Key technologies include web scraping frameworks (BeautifulSoup, Selenium), REST and GraphQL API integrations, and various external maritime data providers. We use Power BI for analytics dashboards and Power Automate for workflow automation.
Location:
Manila, Philippines. After a 6-month probation period on-site, the role will transition to a hybrid rotation of 2 weeks working from home followed by 2 weeks on-site.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with data researchers to identify valuable automation opportunities and translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Design, develop, and deploy production AI/LLM systems that automate maritime data research workflows, identifying relevant prompts and suitable applications for AI tools.
- Build and maintain intelligent data extraction pipelines from diverse maritime sources.
- Implement and optimize API integrations with external maritime data providers and internal systems.
- Deploy and manage applications, configure CI/CD pipelines in GitLab, and ensure system reliability and monitoring.Design and follow software engineering best practices including code quality, testing, documentation, and version control.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in a technical, scientific, or quantitative discipline.
- Strong problem-solving skills and AI-first mentality.
- Coding proficiency in any programming language.
- Extensive use of AI/LLM tools (Claude, ChatGPT, or similar).
- Extracting, cleaning, storing, and analyzing data from diverse sources.
- Self-motivated and curious, with ability to identify automation opportunities and architect solutions from concept through to deployment.
- Clear and confident communicator in verbal and written English, with ability to document technical systems and collaborate with non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable Skills and Experience (not required):
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in computer science, software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, or related field.
- Python or TypeScript programming.
- Building and maintaining production applications and automation systems.
- Experience with cloud AI services (AWS Bedrock, Anthropic API, or similar).
- Familiarity with API frameworks (REST, GraphQL) and experience building integrations with external services.
- Prompt engineering and LLM application development patterns.
- Software development using GitLab CI/CD pipelines or similar DevOps tools.
- Familiarity with data engineering and ETL/ELT pipelines.
- SQL proficiency and experience working with databases.
- Web monitoring tools and change-detection systems.
- Microsoft Power applications (BI, Automate).
